Technology´s progress in fabrics and materials has changed the traditional way of clothing and dress warmly when we practice snow sport. Here´s the “three layer theory” concept.
The days of wear clothing layers as an onion when we went to the snow to keep and stay warm are over. In fact, this could even be counterproductive, because the underwear´s cotton fabrics make sweat and moisture can become into cold in the body.
Nowadays it´s changed and the technical clothes we find on the market has great components of technology and quality to reach comfort and heat, removing moisture. We find skiwear that keep the heat and remove moisture, maintaining an ideal temperature and favouring breathability without allow cold transfer. It must be mixed by a few clothes and it´s known as the three layer theory, creating a corporal microclimate.
- First lay: underwear. Base layer, is what it is in direct contact with the skin, and the most important: the success or failure of all the layers lies in the base. It must feature lightweight, superb moisture management and be soft against the skin. It can be developed with different constructions (seamless, mesh, ecc) and fabrics with specific characteristics (carbon fibre with antistatic properties, polyurethane coating for windproof protection or Merinos wool for a very comfortable fit).
- Second lay: insulation. The second layer or intermediate is usually composed of jerseys and trousers. These garments work as an insulator between your body and the outside elements so they feature thermal capabilities that retain warmth while allowing a slow breathing process. They also can feature varying weights and fabrics depending on the temperature.
- Third lay: external. Crucial for a reliable protection against the elements like rain, snow and wind, comes full circle. This membrane is generally made using laminated fabrics, which is the product of joining various materials. In this way we are able to manufacture windproof and waterproof garments, that are elastic and breathable at the same time, which provide to user with excellent freedom of movement. Using different thickness is the best way to choose the appropriate outfit for every weather condition and provide solutions to the progressive heating needs of athletes.
Anyway this theory is appropriate to any area in the body to dress and protect: hands, trunk and legs. There are many kind of clothing for this lays and in many different fabrics, something great for sensitive to cold or hot people or allergic to any fabric materials.
It has also the advantage of use and combine properly when the weather changes: we can use the first lay in a hot day, add the second lay if cold starts without humidity or the third one if conditions change adversely colder with humidity.
From SKIBACK, we recommend to be advised by professionals to make the best choice and buy the most convenient clothes depending on your sport level and features against cold.
